The most common question we hear: should I buy a projector and screen, or just get a big TV? Both options have genuine strengths. The right answer depends on your room, budget, and what you actually watch. This guide lays out the real differences so you can make the decision once and not regret it.

Screen Size: Where Projectors Win by a Landslide

A 75" TV costs between $1,200 and $2,500 CAD. An 85" TV starts at $2,000 and climbs quickly. A 100" TV — if you can even find one — will run $5,000+.

Picture Quality: Brightness, Contrast, and Colour

In a dark or dim room

A good projector paired with a quality matte white screen produces a picture most viewers find more cinematic than an equivalent-sized TV. The image is large, edge-lit softly by the room rather than by a backlight panel, and the eye reads depth and shadow differently on a large screen than on a self-luminous display. Many videophiles prefer projection in dark rooms for exactly this reason.

In a bright room with ambient light

This is where TVs historically had a significant advantage. A modern OLED or QLED TV handles ambient light effortlessly. A standard projector screen washes out in sunlight or under ceiling fixtures.

ALR (Ambient Light Rejection) screens close this gap substantially. An ALR screen rejects off-axis ambient light while reflecting the projector's on-axis beam efficiently — making projection viable in rooms that aren't fully darkened. It doesn't fully match a bright TV in direct sunlight, but for typical living room conditions (windows not in direct line of sight, ceiling lights dimmed), ALR projection is fully watchable.

Peak brightness

Modern TVs produce 1,000–2,000 nits of peak brightness. Projectors typically produce 100–200 nits on-screen in dark rooms, less in bright rooms. If you need HDR highlights to pop in a sun-drenched room, a TV currently does this better. If you're watching in a controlled environment, projector HDR through a high-contrast grey screen is excellent.

Black levels

OLEDs produce true black (pixels off). Projectors project onto a screen — there is always some light on the screen surface, so deep black requires either a very dark room or a high-contrast grey screen surface. A high-contrast grey screen absorbs ambient light and deepens the projector's blacks significantly, but still won't match an OLED pixel-off black in a bright room.

The larger the screen you want, the more decisively projection wins on cost. At 100" and above, it isn't close.

Setup and Installation

Projector placement

A standard throw projector needs to sit 2.5–4.5 metres from the screen depending on the lens. Many homeowners ceiling-mount the projector or use a shelf behind the seating. Short-throw projectors reduce this to 1–2 metres. UST (ultra short throw) projectors sit just 20–60 cm from the screen — these pair with Fresnel or CLR screens specifically designed for the extreme projection angle.

Screen installation

A fixed frame screen is wall-mounted on a rigid aluminum frame — roughly similar effort to hanging a large flat-panel TV. An electric motorized screen mounts in a housing above the viewing area and drops down at the press of a button. Both options are well within DIY capability for most homeowners.

TV installation

A large TV wall mount requires a stud-reinforced wall — a 75"+ TV can weigh 40–70 kg. Proper installation requires the same care as a projector mount.

When a TV is the Better Choice

  • Your room has uncontrollable direct sunlight — windows facing the screen, no curtains, sun hitting the wall mid-afternoon
  • You need HDR peak brightness for sports in a bright room — TV wins on raw nits in ambient light
  • Your viewing distance is under 2 metres — a large screen at close range is harder to manage with projection
  • You want a single device with minimal setup — a TV is simpler out of the box
  • The screen needs to double as a display board in an office — TVs handle this use case better

When a Projector and Screen is the Better Choice

  • You want 90" or larger for under $1,500 — projection is the only realistic option
  • You have a dedicated media room or can dim the lights — projection excels here
  • You want a cinema-like experience for movies — large, soft-edged image is hard to replicate on an LED panel
  • You have a living room with manageable ambient light — an ALR screen makes projection practical
  • You own a UST or laser TV projector — a Fresnel or CLR screen is purpose-built for these
