Almost every projector screen you'll encounter is 16:9. Almost every projector you'll encounter outputs 16:9. But understanding why — and knowing when other aspect ratios like 2.35:1 (CinemaScope) or 4:3 matter — helps you make the right buying decision and avoid common setup mistakes. This guide explains aspect ratios in plain terms and tells you exactly which one to buy.

What Aspect Ratio Means

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a screen's width and height. A 16:9 screen is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall — a wider-than-tall rectangle that matches the shape of virtually every modern TV, streaming service, and gaming console output. A 2.35:1 screen is 2.35 units wide for every 1 unit tall — the ultra-wide format used in Hollywood theatrical films.

The aspect ratio of your screen should match the aspect ratio of your primary content. A mismatch doesn't prevent you from watching — it just means black bars appear on the sides (pillarboxing) or the top and bottom (letterboxing) of the image.

The Three Main Aspect Ratios

16:9 — The Standard

16:9 (also written 1.78:1) is the aspect ratio of:

  • All modern projectors and televisions

  • YouTube and online video

Think Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, Marvel films, Dune. The wider frame captures epic landscapes and action sequences at full width without cropping.

The challenge: most projectors output 16:9. To properly fill a 2.35:1 screen with a 16:9 projector, you need either:

  • A projector with an anamorphic lens attachment (expensive — $1,000+ CAD for the lens alone)
  • A projector with a built-in zoom memory function that allows you to save separate zoom settings for 16:9 and 2.35:1 content
  • Black bar acceptance — use a 16:9 screen and allow the black bars on 2.35:1 content to appear at top and bottom

A true 2.35:1 screen setup is a specialized home theater investment. For most buyers, 16:9 with accepted letterboxing on theatrical content is the practical and cost-effective approach.

4:3 — Legacy Format

4:3 (also written 1.33:1) is the old television format — nearly square compared to modern widescreen content. Standard definition TV, old VHS and DVD content, and classic pre-2000 films were shot in this ratio.

A 4:3 projector screen is almost never the right choice for a new home theater setup. Modern projectors and content are 16:9. A 4:3 screen wastes the width of the projected image and makes 16:9 content appear in a letterboxed strip across the centre of the screen.

The only reason to consider 4:3 is for dedicated retro gaming setups (SNES, N64, PS1 era gaming) or businesses displaying legacy presentation content. For home theater use: 16:9.

What Happens When Aspect Ratios Don't Match

Black bars are not harmful to projection screens — they're simply areas where no light is projected. The screen material in those areas isn't being used, but it's not damaged. Some viewers find letterboxing distracting; others don't notice it after the first few minutes.

The Constant Image Height (CIH) Setup

Some home theater enthusiasts use a Constant Image Height (CIH) configuration on a 2.35:1 screen. In a CIH setup, the projector is configured so that 16:9 content fills the full height of the 2.35:1 screen with black bars on the sides, and 2.35:1 content fills the full width. The image height stays constant regardless of content ratio, while the width changes.

This setup requires a projector with lens memory or an anamorphic lens, and it provides the maximum image height for a given room. It's the approach used in premium dedicated home theaters where the room is optimized specifically for theatrical film.

For most Canadian homeowners, the cost and complexity of CIH is not justified. A 16:9 setup with letterboxing on theatrical content is far simpler and nearly as satisfying for all but the most dedicated cinephiles.

Native vs Matched Aspect Ratio

Your projector has a native aspect ratio — the physical arrangement of its image sensor or DMD chip. Most modern home theater projectors are 16:9 native. A few are 4:3 native (older business projectors) or 2.39:1 native (specialized cinema projectors).

When your projector's native ratio matches your screen's ratio and your content's ratio, you get a true native-resolution image with no cropping or scaling. Any mismatch — even a small one — results in the projector scaling the image to fit, with a small resolution penalty.

For practical home theater purposes: 16:9 projector + 16:9 screen = native resolution on all modern content. This is the correct baseline configuration.
