Ambient light is the single biggest obstacle to using a projector in a modern home. Open-plan living rooms, kitchen-adjacent spaces, homes with large windows — all of them create conditions that wash out a standard projector screen and make the image look grey and washed out. ALR (Ambient Light Rejection) screens exist specifically to solve this problem. Here's everything you need to know to choose the right one.

Why Ambient Light Destroys Standard Projector Screens

A standard matte white projector screen reflects light in all directions equally — a property called Lambertian reflection. This is ideal in a dark room because the projector's light is the only light source, and every viewer angle gets an even, bright image.

Add ambient light — ceiling fixtures, windows, floor lamps — and the screen reflects that too. The screen can't distinguish between projector light and room light. Everything brightens, contrast collapses, and dark areas of the image fill with grey haze. A 1,500-lumen projector fighting a well-lit living room loses badly.

What ALR Screens Actually Do

ALR screens use optical engineering to solve the directionality problem that Lambertian surfaces can't address. Instead of reflecting all light equally in all directions, they selectively reflect light arriving from the projector's direction while absorbing or diffusing light arriving from other angles (ceiling, sides, floor).

The result: the projector's image reaches your eyes at full intensity while ceiling lights and window light are absorbed rather than bounced back at you. Contrast, colour saturation, and black depth all recover dramatically compared to a standard screen in the same room.

ALR Screen Types: Lenticular, Fresnel, and Crystal

Lenticular CLR (Long Throw)

Lenticular ALR screens use a micro-lens structure to define a specific horizontal acceptance cone for incoming light. They work best with standard long-throw projectors positioned on the ceiling or on a shelf behind the seating. Crystal ALR (Long Throw)

They use concentric lens rings to handle the extreme upward projection angle, and they also reject ambient light from ceiling and side sources. Understanding Gain for Bright Rooms

Gain measures how much a screen amplifies (or reduces) the projector's brightness in the centre viewing zone compared to a reference white surface.

  • Gain 1.0 — neutral. Output equals projector lumens. Wide 160°+ viewing angle. Best for rooms with moderate ambient light and projectors at 2,000+ ANSI lumens.
  • Gain 1.5–2.0 — increased centre brightness. Narrower viewing cone (120°–140°). Good for dedicated viewing positions in bright rooms. Risk of hotspotting if gain is very high.
  • Gain 2.5 — maximum brightness boost. Effective for high-ambient rooms with lower-lumen projectors. Best for single-viewer or paired-viewer setups where everyone sits in the centre zone.

Higher gain is not universally better. If multiple viewers sit at wide angles — family movie nights, sports with friends — a lower-gain screen with a wider viewing cone will give more viewers a good image. Reserve high gain for single-viewer setups or rooms where everyone faces the screen centrally.

Room Setup Tips That Multiply ALR Performance

  • Position the projector on the ceiling or rear shelf — this puts it in the acceptance cone of the ALR screen. Side-mounted or off-axis projectors reduce ALR effectiveness.
  • Use dark wall paint near the screen — white or light-coloured walls adjacent to the screen bounce ambient light back toward the screen surface. Dark grey or navy adjacent walls absorb it.
  • Use directional ceiling lights rather than broad ambient fixtures — recessed spotlights that don't illuminate the screen area are much better than broad ceiling panels.
  • Pull sheer curtains on side windows — sheer curtains diffuse direct sunlight without blocking the room entirely, dramatically reducing the hard directional light that ALR screens can struggle with.
  • Avoid placing floor lamps between the viewer and the screen — these are exactly the worst source angles for ALR screens.
