Electric motorized screens and fixed frame screens are both excellent — they just solve different problems. Choosing between them comes down to your room, how you use the space, and how the screen needs to look when you're not watching. This guide covers the real trade-offs so you can make the right call.

What Each Screen Type Is

Fixed frame screens

A fixed frame screen is permanently mounted on a rigid aluminum frame that attaches directly to the wall. The fabric is stretched taut across the frame and stays in position permanently. It never rolls up, never retracts — it's always there, always flat, always ready.

This is the same setup used in commercial cinemas and professional screening rooms. The rigid frame guarantees a perfectly flat image surface with zero sag, zero drift, and zero distortion at any screen size. It's the reference standard for image quality.

Electric motorized screens

An electric motorized screen stores the fabric rolled inside a housing — a slim cylindrical case that mounts on the ceiling or high on the wall. At the press of a button (or via projector trigger), the screen drops to its deployed position. When not in use, the screen retracts into the housing and becomes invisible.

This makes electric screens the better choice anywhere that appearance matters when the screen is not in use — living rooms, boardrooms, multi-purpose spaces, or any room where a large rectangular frame on the wall would feel out of place 23 hours a day.

Image Quality: Fixed Frame Wins on Paper, Matters Less in Practice

A fixed frame screen maintains perfectly consistent tension across the entire fabric surface. The image is absolutely flat, with no ripple, bow, or variation from edge to edge. This is measurably better than an electric screen's fabric, which can develop minor bow or ripple over time as the rolling mechanism wears.

In practice, for typical home viewing distances (2–5 metres), the difference is imperceptible. No viewer sitting at normal distance can distinguish between a well-tensioned electric screen and a fixed frame at the same size. The quality difference only becomes potentially visible in very large formats (150"+) or in precise calibration environments where you're specifically measuring uniformity.

For the vast majority of home use, both deliver equivalent perceived image quality.

Fixed frame installation

A fixed frame screen arrives as an aluminum frame kit and a fabric panel. Assembly takes 30–60 minutes: you connect the frame sections, attach the fabric by pressing it into the channel around the frame perimeter, then hang the completed frame on the wall using the included hardware. The frame mounts on wall studs the same way a large shelf or TV mount does. Most homeowners complete this without professional help.

Electric screen installation

An electric screen housing mounts to the ceiling (or a high wall position). It requires a power connection nearby — either a ceiling outlet or a cable run to an existing outlet. The housing weight (typically 15–35 kg depending on size) needs to be anchored to ceiling joists. You'll also want a switch, IR receiver, or projector trigger wiring. This is manageable DIY but involves more planning than a fixed frame mount.

When to Choose a Fixed Frame Screen

  • Dedicated home theater or media room — the room is only used for watching; a permanent frame is appropriate and aesthetically coherent
  • You want the best possible image flatness — for critical viewing and calibration
  • Simpler installation without electrical work — no ceiling outlet or trigger wiring required
  • Budget matters — fixed frame screens cost less than equivalent electric models
  • You don't need the screen to disappear — media room alcoves, rooms with a feature wall, or dark-walled theater rooms where the frame blends in

When to Choose an Electric Motorized Screen
