How do I choose between ALR and matte white projector screens?

Choose matte white if you have good lighting control (curtains, a dedicated home theater, or you primarily watch at night). Choose ALR if your room has ambient light you cannot fully control - skylights, open-plan spaces, or daytime viewing. ALR screens reject off-axis ambient light to maintain contrast in lit conditions. Matte white delivers better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles in dark rooms.

When the Ceiling Lights Are the Problem

CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) projector screens use a lenticular micro-lens structure to selectively reject light arriving from above — primarily ceiling fixtures and overhead skylights — while accepting the on-axis beam from a standard or long-throw projector. The result is significantly improved contrast in rooms where ceiling lighting is the dominant ambient light source.

The TrueThrow Lenticular CLR at 0.9 gain is engineered for standard and long-throw projectors with throw ratios of 0.8:1 or higher. Its lenticular structure differentiates it from angular-reflective ALR surfaces: where angular-reflective fabrics (Grey Crystal ALR, Black Crystal ALR) reject side and overhead ambient light through angular geometry, the lenticular CLR specifically targets near-vertical ceiling light — an important distinction in rooms with recessed ceiling fixtures directly above the screen.
