Walk into any projector screen category and you'll see two types: standard matte white screens and ALR (Ambient Light Rejection) screens. ALR screens cost more. Standard screens work everywhere. The question isn't which is technically better — it's which is right for your specific room and projector. This guide gives you the answer in plain terms.

What a Standard Projector Screen Does

A standard matte white screen has a Lambertian surface — it reflects all incoming light equally in all directions, regardless of the angle that light arrives from. This is the ideal behaviour in a dark room: the projector is the only light source, the screen sends that light evenly to all viewing positions, and everyone sees a bright, accurate image from any angle in the room.

Standard screens are simple, reliable, affordable, and colour-accurate. They work perfectly when you control the light. In a dedicated home theater, a blacked-out media room, or any space where you turn off the lights before watching, a standard matte white screen is the technically correct choice. Adding ALR capability when you don't need it costs money without delivering any benefit.

What an ALR Screen Does Differently

An ALR screen is engineered to be directional. Instead of reflecting all incoming light equally, it preferentially reflects light arriving from the projector's direction while absorbing or diffusing light arriving from other angles — ceiling lights, side windows, floor lamps.

This works because ambient light in a room almost always comes from above (ceiling fixtures, skylights) or the sides (windows, lamps). A projector, positioned on the ceiling behind the viewer or on a shelf at viewer height, arrives at the screen from a fundamentally different angle than ambient sources. ALR screens exploit this geometry to separate projector light from room light optically.

The result in a bright room: contrast recovers, colours look saturated rather than washed out, and dark areas of the image appear dark again rather than grey. In a dark room, an ALR screen provides no meaningful improvement over a quality standard screen — you're paying for a capability you don't need.

When to Choose a Standard Screen

  • Dedicated home theater or media room — you control the light, so ambient rejection adds nothing

  • Wide seating arrangements — if viewers sit at angles beyond 100°–120° from centre, a standard screen's wider viewing cone ensures everyone gets a good image
  • Budget is a constraint — if you can dim the lights adequately, a standard screen delivers excellent results at lower cost

When to Choose an ALR Screen

  • Living room with ceiling lights on during viewing — the most common case for ALR
  • Rooms with windows that can't be fully blocked — indirect daylight, sheer curtains, glass doors
  • Open-plan kitchen-living areas — kitchen lights on while watching in the lounge
  • Lower-lumen projector in a bright room — ALR multiplies effective brightness by removing the ambient competition
  • Sports and casual TV watching in normal lighting — nobody wants to turn off all the lights just to follow a game

ALR Screen Types: Which One for Which Projector

Crystal ALR (for standard long-throw projectors)

Crystal ALR screens use multi-layer optical coatings to achieve directional reflection. They work with standard projectors positioned on the ceiling behind the seating or on a shelf. TrueThrow offers two options:
