Fresnel vs ALR Projector Screen: What's the Difference?
Fresnel and ALR are both terms used for projector screens that handle ambient light — but they describe fundamentally different technologies designed for completely different projectors. Using the wrong one with your projector is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in home theater setup. This guide explains exactly what each technology does, why they're not interchangeable, and how to choose correctly.
What ALR Means (and What It Doesn't)
ALR stands for Ambient Light Rejection. It describes any screen surface that preferentially reflects the projector's light while absorbing or diffusing light arriving from ambient sources — ceiling fixtures, windows, lamps. ALR is a property, not a single technology. Multiple different screen structures can deliver ALR performance.
When people say "ALR screen" without qualification, they usually mean a standard long-throw ALR screen — one designed for projectors positioned on the ceiling behind the viewer or on a shelf at the rear of the room. These use crystal multi-layer coatings or lenticular micro-lens structures to achieve directionality.
Fresnel screens are also ALR screens — but they use a completely different optical structure tuned specifically for a completely different projector type. The Fresnel name describes the lens geometry used, not just the ambient-light-rejection property.
What a Fresnel Screen Is
A Fresnel screen uses a series of concentric circular lens rings — a Fresnel lens pattern — embedded in or on the screen surface. This pattern is specifically designed to handle light arriving at a very steep upward angle: the projection geometry of an ultra short throw (UST) or laser TV projector sitting just 20–60 cm in front of and below the screen.
When a UST projector fires its beam upward at 60–80° from horizontal, a standard ALR screen's optical structure can't handle it — the acceptance cone of a standard ALR is designed for a projector coming from the rear at a shallower angle. A Fresnel screen's concentric lens geometry redirects that steep upward beam correctly to the viewer's eyes while simultaneously rejecting ceiling and side ambient light.
Think of it this way: a standard ALR screen is like a satellite dish aimed at the horizon (ceiling-mounted projector). A Fresnel screen is like a satellite dish aimed nearly straight up (UST projector from below). They're different shapes because they're capturing signals from different directions.

What Happens If You Use the Wrong Screen
Standard ALR with a UST projector
The upward-angled beam from the UST projector arrives outside the acceptance cone of a standard ALR screen. Most of the light is absorbed or reflected away from the viewer. The image appears very dim, often with heavy non-uniformity — brighter at the bottom where the beam enters the screen and progressively darker toward the top. This is not a calibration issue; it's a fundamental geometry mismatch.

A standard projector's beam arrives at the wrong angle for the Fresnel lens pattern. The concentric rings refract the beam incorrectly, creating visible dark banding across the image — typically horizontal stripes corresponding to the Fresnel zone boundaries. The image is unwatchable.
Neither mismatch is fixable through settings, calibration, or positioning adjustments. The only fix is the correct screen type for your projector.
How to Identify Your Projector Type
UST / laser TV projectors (need Fresnel screen)
UST projectors sit on a media unit or console directly below and in front of the screen. The throw ratio is typically 0.25:1 or lower — meaning the projector sits just 25 cm from the screen for every 100 cm of image width. Common UST projector brands include:
